Genesis 1 has three main points
1) 1:1-2 Introduction to Creation
2) 1:3-13 First Three Days - God Forms!
3) 1:14-31 Last Three Days - God Fills
1) 1:1-2 Introduction to Creation
a) God is _________________
"Isaiah 41:4 Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he."
2) God is _________________
3) God is _________________
- what this passage teaches us about creation before the next section is that creation was formless, without form and dark
- this does not seem like a wonderful place to inhabit
- but what we also see here in Genesis 1:2 is we have the Holy Spirit as well involved in creation
- some people teach that the Holy Spirit is a doctrine of the New Testament, but here we have the 2nd verse teaches us that the Holy Spirit is God and with God the Father at the beginning!
- God Forms and Fills Creation
- Each day really has 7 sections
(1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26, 29)
ii) God commands (let there be) (1:3, 6, 9, 14, 20, 24, 26
iii) God separates (1:4, 6, 7, 14, 18)
iv) God reports (and it was so or it was thus) (1:3, 6, 7, 9, 11, 15, 21, 24, 30, 31)
v) God names (God called ______ ________) (1:5, 8, 10)
vi) God says His creation is Good (1:4, 7, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31)
vii) God is Orderly (1:5, 8, 13, 19, 23, 31)
- Each Day Is Connected
2) 1:3-13 First Three Days - God Forms!
Day #1 -- Gen 1:3-5
Day #2 -- Gen 1:6-8
Day #3 -- Gen 1:6-13
3) 1:14-31 Last Three Days - God Fills!
Day #4 -- Gen 1:14-19
Day #5 -- Gen 1:20-23
Day #6 -- Gen 1:24-31
Then there is Day #7 -- Gen 2:1-3
Application
1) God Is The All Powerful Creator
"Isaiah 40:12-15 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance? 13 Who has measured the Spirit of the LORD, or what man shows him his counsel? 14 Whom did he consult, and who made him understand? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? 15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the coastlands like fine dust. "
Genesis 3-11
2) God Has Made Us In His Image
"Genesis 1:26-28 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.""
3) Creation Points Us To Jesus
"Ecclesiastes 7:29 See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes."
"2 Corinthians 4:4-6 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."
